Many people hear about acid reflux symptoms, and wonder whether they might be suffering from the problem. Others suspect that they might be experiencing the condition, but are not quite sure what acid reflux symptoms are.
In this article, we look at the most common acid reflux symptoms, in order to help you decide whether you might need to seek a medical diagnosis, or treatment for the disorder.
Heartburn
One of the most common, universal acid reflux symptoms out there, heartburn is actually stomach acid, which pushes up into your oesophagus, and causes a burning sensation. Although it is one of the least pleasant of the acid reflux symptoms, the good news is that heartburn, in fact, has nothing to do with your heart, and is usually treatable!
Dyspepsia
Dyspepsia is actually the term for a group of common acid reflux symptoms. These could include burping, bloating, nausea or upper abdominal pain, most of which usually occur shortly after eating.
Regurgitation
Like dyspepsia, regurgitation is one of the symptoms of acid reflux that is most likely to happen just after you finish a meal. In this case, you are likely to experience acid rising in the back of your throat. Sometimes, this is accompanied by a sour taste, and often, it can result in what is known as a ‘wet burp’ where some of the food you have eaten is vomited up.
When Are You Most Likely to Have Acid Reflux
Symptoms?
Acid reflux symptoms can occur at any time, but there are certain instances when they are more likely to occur. These include:
- When you are lying horizontal, especially, but not always, when you lie on your back
- After a meal – particularly a heavy meal, or when you have overeaten
- When you bend over to lift a heavy object
- During pregnancy, when the growing baby puts pressure on your stomach
- After eating specific foods, including chocolate, tomatoes, citrus fruits, onions and garlic, and peppermint
- After drinking caffeinated or alcoholic beverages
Most people will experience acid reflux symptoms at some point in their lives. They are often a normal reaction to something you have done or eaten. However, they do become a problem when they are the rule, rather than the exception.
Are Acid Reflux Symptoms Dangerous?
In most cases, acid reflux symptoms are more annoying and irritating than actually dangerous. However, if they persist, or if you experience them all the time, instead of sporadically, or if there is a lot of pain associated with your symptoms, then your acid reflux symptoms could be a sign of a more serious underlying problem.
In those cases, it is better to seek a medical opinion, to diagnose any potential complications, and to treat them.
In the vast majority of cases, there are simple lifestyle changes you can make to eliminate your acid reflux symptoms, or over the counter medications that can treat them when they occur. However, it is always better to be safe, rather than sorry, and if you are concerned, there is no harm in visiting a physician for confirmation!
